TO YURT OR NOT TO YURT

Glamping is a blend of the words “glamorous” and “camping.” It refers to a style of camping that combines the experience of being close to nature with the luxury and amenities of a hotel. Glamping accommodations often include comfortable beds, electricity, heating or air conditioning, private bathrooms, and sometimes even gourmet meals. It allows people to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

In November, I travelled to Cap Chat and stayed in a yurt, experiencing true glamping. The yurt offered stunning views of the St. Laurent River; depending on the time of year one could possibly spot whales . The waves crashing on the shore provided the perfect background setting to escape the city hustle. One of the highlights was the sauna, which provided a perfect way to relax after long walks in the surrounding nature. The pace of life was wonderfully slow, allowing me to fully disconnect and enjoy the tranquility.

Yurts with a sky view offered a unique blend of rustic charm and natural beauty. The wood stove inside created a cozy, toasty atmosphere, making the space inviting and warm even on the coldest days. Time seems notably slower here, allowing you to fully relax and immerse yourself in the serene surroundings.

The yurt’s proximity to Gaspésie Park made it an ideal base for exploring the region’s natural beauty, including hiking trails and wildlife observation.

Pros of staying in a yurt:

  • Unique and cozy accommodation blending comfort with nature
  • Beautiful panoramic views of the St. Laurent River and whale watching opportunities
  • Access to a sauna for relaxation
  • Peaceful environment encouraging slow living and mindfulness
  • Close to Gaspésie Park for outdoor activities and exploration

Cons of staying in a yurt:

  • Limited modern amenities compared to traditional hotels
  • Possible temperature fluctuations; may require dressing in layers
  • Less privacy as yurts can be more open and less soundproof
  • Accessibility might be challenging for people with mobility issues due to natural terrain
  • Seasonal availability, with some facilities closing in off-peak months

Overall, staying in a yurt in Cap Chat is a memorable experience for nature lovers seeking a blend of adventure and comfort. What is your perfect glamping idea or spot?
